 Read Kathryn's Journal

Kathryn is new to Philadelphia living in Queen Village. She is twenty-two years old and works for an oral surgeon in Bryn Mawr. In her down time Kat loves to cook for her friends and beau. She’s an avid writer and singing is her passion. All around Renaissance woman, Kat is constantly creating, “I’m all about sustainable design on a global level!” Studying Political Ecology/Design in the fall and volunteering this summer, hopefully for an eco-minded non-profit.

 Read Myriah's Journal

Myriah has been living in Philadelphia for almost 7 years and loves her city! She works at Temple University as an academic advisor, she volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters (she gives a shout out to her little sister, Brenda), and she is trying desperately to reduce her carbon footprint with a little help from PhillyCarShare. Myriah’s free time is spent taking college classes (because it’s fun!), cooking, reading, loving her dog, Cholula, and being a fan/roadie/critic of her musician husband, Andrew.

 Read Rebecca's Journal

Rebecca- I am a 36-year old Bella Vista resident - a transplant to Philadelphia via Massachusetts, Rhode Island, DC and Texas. It's hard to define myself in a short bio, because I'm recovering from a surfing accident (A word to the wise - don't ever let a beginner surfer run you over. Ouch.) and working to redefine myself in its wake. Professionally, I'm a lawyer with degrees from Brown and Georgetown and while I'm on leave I'm spending my time volunteering and exploring Philadelphia with my recently rescued dog, Barnum - a transplant to Philadelphia via Mississippi.

 Read David's Journal

David is a practicing Certified Public Accountant, living and working - with car - in Center City Philadelphia since 1996, and concerned with environmental issues.

 Read Jay & Amy's Journal
Jay moved to Philadelphia four years ago to work for an educational nonprofit in Newtown, PA. He grew up in Florida and lived in Texas and North Carolina before coming to Philly. "I love living in the Art Museum/Fairmount area and its proximity to Center City and all the fun stuff there is to do. It will be tough for me to give up my car, especially since it means getting up at 5 a.m. to catch a 6:20 a.m. train to the burbs for work, but I am committed and excited to participate in this adventure." Jay particularly likes walking around the city and really experiencing the various neighborhoods and looks forward to much more of that in May.

Amy moved to Philadelphia four years ago and has worked as a nurse in the PICU at CHOP since 2004. She lives with her husband, Jay, and their two dogs, Guinness and Bailey. "We are pretty used to our Jeep Commander and giving that up for a month will be a really interesting challenge, but we are excited to try." Amy's Philly favorites include Monk's Belgian Tavern, and Brown Betty cupcakes. Amy is active in the Junior League of Philadelphia.

 Read Dennis's Journal

Dennis - If there’s one defining thing about me, it’s that I don’t sit still! Mostly that’s okay, but I’m addicted to being mobile. Currently I work a rewarding job in Norristown, I own an apartment building in South Philly, I live in Bella Vista, and I’m a grad student at Penn. No two days are ever the same. Sometimes I work evenings for my main job, which could be anywhere in the Philadelphia region. Whether it’s Saturday classes, evening lectures, maintenance at the apartments or dinner out with my partner, I’m always on the go. My family lives out of the area, and I like to travel, too.

 Read Suzanne's Journal

Suzanne - I am a Philadelphian since birth, raised in Fox Chase (Northeast) then moved to the suburbs as a teenager. I have always been passionate about urban living ever since childhood. Currently I live in South Philadelphia and reverse commute to Ardmore where I work as an interior designer. My interest in participating in the Challenge reflects my personal commitment to a healthier 'green' lifestyle as a
LEED-accredited design professional and a concerned Philadelphian.

 Read Patty's Journal

Patty - I'm 36 years old and living in the art museum area of the city. I've been here for 5 years now and I love all that the city has to offer. I'm currently working as a full-time nanny for two little boys. I also have my own photography business on the side (doing children's portraits). As for my free time, I like to explore new restaurants, run, do photography, travel everywhere, and listen to music. I love to spend time hanging out with my friends and family and I always seem to be around children!

 Read the Richardson's Journal

The Richardsons - Originally from Indiana, Andrew and Jessica moved to Philadelphia four years ago, and currently reside in the Wynnefield Heights neighborhood. Andrew works for The College Board in Bala Cynwyd as an Educational Associate, and Jessica stays home with their daughter Anabel Grace. The Richardsons enjoy spending time with family and friends and going to gatherings at House of God’s Light, an interdenominational Christian community in Ardmore.

 Read Ariel's Journal

Ariel - I am originally from New Jersey, and moved to Philly three years ago, where I work for an energy consulting company as an attorney. I live in Center City with my husband, our one -year -old daughter, and our three cats. In our free time we visit family and friends, dine out, shop, and visit parks and museums in the city. We can't wait to see if we can do all of this without our car!

 Read Gail's Journal

Gail has lived in the Midwest ‘burbs forever. Two years ago, she embraced her inner urbanite, having fallen in love with Philadelphia. She often walks to the Headhouse Square Farmers' Market (where she volunteers) to indulge her food obsession. Such indulgences resulted in a bit of weight gain, and she has vowed to leave her 1990 Miata at home in May in an effort to approach her half-century mark in a slimmer frame.

 Read Brendon's Journal

Brendon is an eleven-year resident of Philadelphia, and four-year resident of "Port Fishington". A graduate of The University of the Arts, he is active in the Philly theater scene as a performer, director and teacher. He recently founded OMBELICO Mask Ensemble, an outdoor theater company dedicated to enriching this city's open spaces, with minimal negative impact to our environment. He's also spent time as a bike messenger, carriage driver, and TV puppeteer.

 Read Samantha's Journal

Samantha - I grew up on a farm in Maryland and attended a small, liberal arts college. After I graduated, I was a recruiter for my college for two years. I decided I needed a change of pace, so I packed my bags and moved to Philadelphia. I found a fantastic job as a recruiter for a staffing agency. I love spending my free time exploring the city, meeting new people, and cheering on the Phillies!

 Read Maria's Journal

Maria - I am a 41-year-old server who is applying for nursing school. I consider myself environmentally conscious but am always aware that every one of us can likely do more than we are actually doing. I run my own household and care for two elderly family members. I have a lot of responsibility and look forward to discovering if I can do it all without a vehicle.

 Read Fredda's Journal

Fredda is a registered Architect, LEED AP. She has a Masters in Architecture from The University of Pennsylvania and a BFA in Industrial Design from Carnegie-Mellon University. Fredda lives in Powelton Village with her husband and children. Fredda works on sustainable initiatives and capital projects for the City of Philadelphia. She enjoys biking around center city and traveling.

 Read Lisa's Journal

Lisa - I like cheese, but I'm lactose intolerant. Until 2 weeks ago I hadn't ridden a bike in about 5 years. I'm training for a bike race. My friends have told me I should be a singing wedding photographer, because I am a photographer and I sing. Genius. I'm short, but I play volleyball and attempt to be taller than I actually am. I was allotted 75 words; I have 5 left. Oh, I'm an AmeriCorps member.

Teresa worked as a newspaper reporter for three years in the Hudson Valley region of New York. She moved to Philadelphia in 2004, and worked as a turning producer and casting producer for Banyan Television Productions. In 2005 she became a writer and editor for nbc10.com. In 2006 she was part of a team that launched digphilly.com, where she is now a writer and editor for all things Philadelphia.

 Read Leah's Journal

Leah is 26 years old and from Nashville, Tennessee. Leah originally got hooked on alternative forms of transportation while living in Ochtrup, Germany. Living on the German plains in a tiny village whose only claim to fame was a good pilsner, she got the hang of riding a bike around town. In 2005, Leah proved that she could get most anywhere on two wheels when she road coast to coast from New Haven, Connecticut to Portland, Oregon. Now, Leah is a paralegal in downtown Philly, dodging traffic and lane-splitting in center city on her bike with high heels.
